Bio-Digital Resonance: Ambient Live Session & Modular Synthesis
What does a plant sound like when connected to a synthesizer? This ambient piece is a unique sonic experiment that translates the biological impulses of a living plant into MIDI signals, turning nature itself into a musical instrument. It’s a hypnotic journey where the boundary between organic life and digital synthesis completely fades away
🌿 The Bio-Interface (How it Works)
To turn the plant into a musician, we used a specialized device – PlantWave. By attaching bio-sensors directly to the celery leaves, the device detects subtle, microscopic fluctuations in electrical resistance inside the plant (driven by moisture and cellular activity). It then translates these organic bio-data streams into real-time MIDI notes and control data, which are sent straight into our synthesizer setup.

Behind the Sound (Technical Details)
For those interested in the modular and generative side of this project, here is how the ecosystem was built:
- Bio-Signal Source: PlantWave captures raw MIDI notes and real-time bio-data directly from the plant’s cellular activity.
- Sequencing & Control: Structural sequencing and pattern control were driven by the Synthstrom Deluge.
- Host Environment: Ardour DAW served as the central audio host for routing and real-time processing.
- Synthesis & Modulation: Incoming MIDI notes and bio-data streams were transformed, modulated, and synthesized inside Cardinal Modular (based on VCV Rack architecture).
